Etro werd in 1968 opgericht door Gerolamo “Gimmo” Etro als een textielontwerpbedrijf. De belangrijkste stilistische driver voor Etro in de eerste decennia was het Paisley-patroon en variaties op dit thema. Het hoofdkantoor van het bedrijf bevindt zich in Milaan aan de Via Spartaco en werd in 1977 gerenoveerd. Het hoofdkantoor bevat textielkunst gearchiveerd in hun eigen bibliotheek. Toekomstig textielhoofd Jacopo Etro gaf later commentaar op deze periode en verklaarde dat hij het archief was gaan bezoeken toen hij een kind was, vele uren bezig was met het kopiëren van de stofontwerpen en experimenteerde met zijn eigen creatieve stijl. Na een reis naar India, gemaakt door leidinggevenden van Etro, debuteerde de meubellijn textiel in 1981.
